He has normal triglycerides and cholesterol readings with normal blood pressure readings. His father died at age 60 from heart disease and his mother is in good health except for high blood pressure. Steve has come to you for initial diet advice before meeting with the dietician assigned to his case for formal diabetes management. He is confused and does not understand how he got this disease or why he should be concerned with what he eats. He feels that if he does nothing like his father did, his diabetes will eventually "go away." How many calories per day does Steve need? Consider the foods to be avoided.
