Instructions

Supplies:

• Glucometer
• Test Strips
• Alcohol Wipes
• Sugary snacks or glucose tablets

Part A

Step 1: Read the Entire Lab Packet

1.0- Read through the laboratory packet - SEE ATTACHED SHEETS and read pages 391 - 401 of Laboratory Manual for Anatomy & Physiology (5th Edition)

Part B

Step 2: Come to the Lab with Proper PPE

IMPORTANT NOTATION: 2 MEMBERS OF YOUR TEAM SHOULD COME TO LABORATORY IN A ‘FASTING STATE' - no food or drinks for at least 3 hours prior to laboratory - only have members of your group without any health constraints participate in this component of the lab!!

2.0 - Follow the instructions provided by your professor

2.1 - Obtain needed equipment and supplies to be set up at your laboratory station

• gloves
• laboratory coat
• glucometer
• test strips
• lancets
• alcohol wipes
• high sugar content snacks or glucose tablets

2.3 - Follow the directions of the packet and as presented by your instructor conduct the experiment on glucose regulation

2.4 -Collect the data on two members of your laboratory team

2.5 - Share the results of your laboratory team with all other research teams in your class

2.6 - Analyze the results and write a formal lab report as outlined below

2.7 - Make sure to include the following in your report

a. - a tabular presentation of your data
b. - answers to the following questions related to sugar regulation in the blood.

i. Did the time that a person fasted have anything to do with the amount of increase of sugar in the blood following ingestion of the glucose tablets

ii. How quickly did the glucose levels rise in the blood following ingestion?

iii. Why was there a delay?

iv. How long did blood sugar remain elevated and why?

v. Did the weight of the subject have anything to do with the amount of increase in blood glucose? Why or Why not?

Title

Introduction: The first section of your lab report will be the introduction. In this paragraph or paragraphs, you are to provide information to the reader so that he or she can understand the purpose of the experiment.

• Purpose: A concise statement about the lab's objective.

• Background: A brief summary of the topic you are investigating. Include any information that would be necessary to understand the stated purpose.

Procedure: This is the second section in your lab report. This section includes information that the reader would need to repeat your experimental procedure. Do not include any observations or results in this section.

Some questions that you should ask yourself to complete this section include: What was used? What equipment? How long did you perform a step within the procedure?

Observations and Results: This is the third section of your report. In this section, you will communicate what you observed during the experiment. The results section is typically dominated by calculations, tables, and figures. In your tables, label the axes of any graphs.

Discussion: This is the fourth section of your report. In this section, you will explain, analyze, and interpret your observations and results. Additionally, you will draw conclusions based on your existing knowledge. This also is where you demonstrate your understanding of the experiment by construing the significance or meaning of the results. This is the section where you should answer any accompanying questions with the laboratory procedure.

Conclusion: This is the last section of your report and is separate from the discussion section. In a few sentences, provide a concluding statement about the results of your lab. In a scientific publication, this section summarizes the significant aspects and results, and identifies implications for future study.
