Intrapersonal Skills
Assessment Task - Portfolio (Individual Assignment)
Description
In universities and future workplaces, we do not work alone but are required to constantly interact with others. Acquiring knowledge and developing the skills for effective interpersonal communication is crucial to your personal growth and professional success. After working through the interpersonal skills modules, in this assessment you will apply your learning through a simulated communication task and an activity that involves providing feedback to a peer in the unit. The purpose of this assessment is to provide you opportunities to:
Evaluate major factors to consider in interpersonal communication in a discipline-specific setting
Apply concepts and theories covered in Modules 6-9 and film a video that simulates communication in a work situation that involves persuasion and negotiation and requires sensitivity about the characteristics of the target
Share your ideas and critiques with peers about each other's work in a friendly, constructive, and creative manner
Enhance your digital literacy by applying a variety of tools and applications to complete the assignment tasks and interact with peers
Through engaging in this assessment, you will reflect on and learn about the factors to consider during interpersonal communication. These skills help prepare you for future success and effective personal growth.
Specific Requirements
In this assessment task, you are required to film a video that explains your thoughts on a societal problem that relates to one of the Modules 6-9 topics. You will upload your video to the Feedback Fruit platform on the unit site so your classmates can review it and share suggestions. You will also be assigned a classmate's video to constructively critique.
Part A: Video Recording
Basing your analysis on one concept learned in ONE module from Modules 6 to 9, identify a societal problem based on the UN SDG framework. To help you obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the problem, its implications to stakeholders, and the advantages and limitations of possible solutions, conduct independent research to gather more information about the issue. Based on the information gathered, film a 5-minute video to address ONE of the following topics or modules:
How does the identified societal problem relate to the concepts introduced in Module 6? For example, is the problem related to any biased perceptions and behaviours of people at work or in daily life?
From your perspective, what are the causes of those biased perceptions and behaviours? Discuss your insights based on your learning about relevant concepts or theories in the module.
What were (or could be) the consequences of those biased perceptions and behaviours to individuals, organisations, and our society?
If you are to suggest one solution to address this problem, what can that be?
How is the identified societal problem related to the concepts introduced in Module 7? For example, is the problem related to barriers in communication at work or in daily life?
From your perspective, what may cause misunderstanding, interference, conflicts, or ineffective communication with others? Discuss your insights based on your learning about relevant concepts or theories in the module.
What were (or could be) the consequences of ineffective communication to individuals, organisations, and our society?
If you are to suggest one solution to address this problem, what can that be?
How is the identified societal problem related to the concepts introduced in Module 8? For example, is the problem related to any ethical dilemma at work or in daily life? How might that dilemma influence the involved parties and our society?
What would you do when you come across unethical behaviours from individuals or organisations? Discuss your insights based on your learning about relevant concepts or theories in the module.
What factors do you consider in forming your judgment and decision?
If you are to suggest one solution to address this problem, what can that be?
How is the identified societal problem related to the concepts introduced in Module 9? For example, is the problem related to leadership challenges?
Do you see yourself as a leader at work or in daily life? Why/ why not? Discuss your insights based on your learning about relevant concepts or theories in the module.
Based on your experience and observation, how have leaders been tackling this identified problem?
If you are to suggest one alternative solution to address this problem, what can that be?
Your video recording
The transcript of your video.
For Panopto, captions are automatically enabled, generated, and accessible on the Caption tab next to your file on the left-hand side panel. For Zoom, transcript files are also automatically generated and downloadable (refer to this link for more information).
Digital tools to film your video: To film your video, we recommend you use one of the software applications Deakin holds a license with, including Kaltura Capture or Zoom. You can film a video using your web camera or smartphone device.
Format for video file submission: Please ensure your video file is in a commonly accessible format. We recommend you use Panopto, which is an existing application integrated with the CloudDeakin unit site that enables you to directly record and submit your video to the Assessment 3, Part A drop box. The video ‘Adding Video Submission to CloudDeakin' provides a step-by-step guide as to how to film and upload your files to the assignment drop box.
AI-generated video: We do not accept any AI-generated video in this assessment. This is because we believe such videos do not help to develop students' interpersonal and communication skills, which is a major intended learning outcome (ILO) of this unit.
Part B: 300-word Peer Assessment
Within 24 hours after your video submission, your video will be assigned to a classmate for review and critique, and you will receive a colleague's video to critique. Complete your critique in Feedback Fruit. Upload your critique in Word and the PDF report from Feedback Fruit to the Assessment 3, Part B drop box by Thursday 26 September 2024, 8pm.
Your Task:
Write a feedback report in essay format (Word file) that critiques the following aspects.
Identification of societal problem: Has your peer's video covered a relevant societal problem that relates to your own lived experience?
Analysis of the societal problem: Has your peer provided comprehensive and critical discussion on the causes and consequences linked to the societal problem based on a relevant concept or framework? What did your peer do well? How can your peer's analysis be improved in terms of their application of the theory, information gathering, and coherence of discussion?
Suggested solutions for the societal problem: What do you think about the suggestions proposed by your peer to resolve the societal problem? Discuss what you appreciate about the suggestions or possible improvements in their discussion. Are there any other suggestions you can think of to tackle the issues?
Being critical does not mean being negative or disagreeing with the approach taken in the video. Try to be constructive and focus on whether there are any perspectives your classmates have not considered but you think are important. Try to be specific about feedback regarding concepts, frameworks, and examples covered in the module by directing your peer to relevant book chapters, readings, cases, or web resources for their reference and learning.
