In the oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway, energy is extracted from glucose 6-phosphate to produce NADPH and yield ribose 5-phosphate. The free-energy change for this process is large and exergonic. In the non-oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway, a series of carbon swapping reactions regenerate glucose 6-phosphate from ribose 5-phosphate. These reactions do not consume energy, and the overall free-energy change for the non-oxidative phase is close to zero. In cells that carry out fatty acid synthesis, the two phases of the pathway continuously cycle, from glucose 6-phosphate to ribose 5-phosphate and back to glucose 6-phosphate. If the oxidative phase releases energy (in the form of NADPH) but the non-oxidative phase doesn't consume any energy, how is it possible for them to keep cycling? Explain.
How does real time PCR work to quantify the initial amount of the DNA template? How should the method be modified to quantify the initial amount of RNA template extracted from tissue or cells?
Martha is maintaining her current weight by eating 2,500 kcalories per day. To lose 1 pound of fat per week, she would have to decrease her intake to how several kcalories per day. Considering the albedo of various surfaces how might temperatures var..

If the coding fraction (that in exons) of the human genome is 1.5% of the total and there are 21,000 protein-coding genes (assumed to be equally long), how many nt differentiate that exonic fraction?
Tay-Sachs is a recessive lethal disease in which there is neurological deterioration early in life. The disease is rare in the population overall but is found at relatively high frequency in Ashkenazi Jews from Central Europe.
T.J. and Tyler were building a tree-house. While searching for a board in a pile of used lumber, T.J. stepped on a rusty nail that penetrated deep into his foot, causing it to bleed.
Assume you make buffer solution by adding four gram sodium bicarbonate to 270 milliliters of water then titrate this solution to 30 ml of 0.1 molar HCl and find the equilibrium equation for this base/acid pair.
Could you elaborate on the process of antimicrobial peptides interacting with the plasma membrane/bacterial cytoplasmic membrane.
Assume you are studying fruit fly wing development. The wingless gene determines shape of wings. The phenotype associated with dominant allele, W, is normal wing development.
