Article Analysis
This exercise is grounded in the writing of a critical review of one article. In approximately 750 words you are asked to respond to the work of one researcher.
You must summarise/describe the substance of the paper and then make some judgement about what they have done and how they have done it. You need to provide supporting evidence for your judgement. Look at the Book Review sections of any of these journals, stop and read several of the reviews, to see the way others have managed this task.
Respond to one of the following questions:
1) Gary Fine's account of "justifying work" explores the persuasive importance of particular occupations in a professional kitchen. How does he make his account convincing? Are you convinced by his account - given its location in time and space?
2) In their account of the social transformations in the world game in Australia stemming from the so-called Crawford report, Georgakis and Molloy examine how a number of experts have understood recent changes in the sport. What are the major transformations that are examined in this account? How is gender woven into or out of their account?
3) Alex Golub's ethnographic account of the World of Warcraft writes about the ways that cultural understandings are shaped in a massively multiplayer online game. How does he locate and account for his own relationship, as an ethnographer, to the evidence he examines? Is this significant?
4) Sarah Pink's account of the "slow city" attempts to document and to understand changes that are taking place in life around her. Is her notion of "the sensory city" a useful way to open up this tssue? Now does she use evidence to make her argument?
