Overview
Review the Assignment Expectations
Your primary goal is to outline the current state of scholarship in your research area in anticipation of, and as a foundation for, a later full literature review. You will be expected to demonstrate two types of reading competencies throughout the assignment.
First, you will be expected to demonstrate source descriptive reading skills. By completing the tasks outlined below, you will read and evaluate individual sources critically and deeply. For example, in your annotations on the three most relevant sources for each theme, you will be expected to relay comprehensive summaries of the key components of these sources as well as critical evaluations of them.
Second, you will be expected to demonstrate field descriptive reading skills. As much as the assignment encourages you to dig into particular sources, it also requires that you make meaningful connections between these sources, synthesizing them to illuminate trends and patterns in the field. For example, a source table might list and compare the populations of different studies to illuminate the patterns of a particular field. This work will be particularly crucial to your later literature review in ENG8020.

The document you created in Module 6 and then revised in the Module 7 Discussion: Revising Your Research Area Primer assignment. You will build on this document to create the Research Area Primer.
The research area primer resources listed in the reading & preparation for this module, including the sample template for the research area primer and examples of past students' primers.
Develop the Assignment
Develop your Research Area Primer. It should include these parts:
An introduction that:
Outlines the rationale (i.e., the problem or practice and the problem or gap of research) that you hope to address.
Provides a brief overview of the central themes, trends, and patterns you have observed in the given field.
Introduces the research question(s) you are pursuing.
Outlines the central takeaway(s) from your review of the literature so far.
A series of body sections that investigate the particular themes that you have observed. In your discussion of at least three research themes, you must include the following content for each theme:
1-2 paragraphs that describe the given theme, pattern, or trend.
Three annotations of the sources most pertinent to this theme.
A visual aid with a brief written explanation that illuminates the trend in a clear way. You are particularly encouraged to draft a source table.
A conclusion in which you:
Discuss what implications your primer has for your literature review and broader research agenda.
Reflect on how your understanding of academic writing and research habits has changed over the course of the unit.
A reference list that includes approximately 15-25 sources that you have cited or will cite in your literature review.
An appendix that summarizes the structure of your note-taking library and/or provides snapshots of this library.
