Language and academic proficiency are two important aspects of teaching ELLs. The second language learner often lacks knowledge of the necessary academic language in content area subjects. Teachers need to understand the processes of second language acquisition in order to better plan instruction and assessment of ELLs.

Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research how focusing on both language and academic content leads to greater success of ELLs in the classroom. Then, write a paper that answers the following questions:

What are the main differences between teaching academic language to ELLs and to native English-speaking students?

How does understanding the second language acquisition (SLA) process assist a teacher in planning for instruction?

How will the inclusion of a language objective assist teachers in addressing the Common Core standards in their classrooms?

Explain how the addition of a language objective will fit into the content areas in different subjects and grade levels.
