Gas gangrene is caused by the highly pathogenic bacterium, Clostridium perfringens. This bacterium destroys animal tissue structure by producing an efficient protease that cleaves sequences of X-gly-pro-Y. How does the secretion of this enzyme contribute to the invasive properties of this bacterium? AND why doesn't this protease affect the bacterium itself?
