You have been appointed as an advisor to recommend on the type and location of the new power stations. After extensive research you concluded that by 2025:

-The total installed electric capacity must be 90 GW (This includes a 15% spare capacity)

-20% of electricity will come from renewable sources (25 % Wind and 75 % Solar Thermal)

-10% will be imported (mainly from Mozambique and the DRC)

-15% will be from nuclear power stations (base load)

-5% will be from combined cycle gas turbines

-40 % will be from coal power stations (base load)

-4 % will be pumped storage capacity

-5 % will be peaking gas turbines

-1 % will be peaking hydro

The focus of this project will be on the conventional technologies (the last 6 on the list). Convert the percentages above to installed capacity in MW for each type of power station.

A total of 4% of 90 GW for pumped storage was suggested for 2025. This amounts to a total installation of 3.6 GW of pumped storage. What is the current installed pump storage capacity in SA? It can be assumed that the current installations will remain in service beyond 2025 provided that they are well maintained. What is the total additional pump storage need?
