Course Paper Information
Part 1
For Part 1 of the course paper you will address 3 areas: the historical context of the film, the major ideas and issues presented, and a major sociological perspective for analysis. The paper should be 1-2 pages in length.
Descriptions for Content Criteria
Historical Context : Sociohistorical context refers to the immediate social and historical factors that shape life in a given time period. Consider the following questions (you do not have to directly answer each of these questions):
What is the time period (year, era) within the film?
How does the film reflect (or not) the social context of that time period?
Discuss any relevant major events that took place during the time period, that influence or shape the film content.
What were some of the beliefs, norms, and values (culture) of the time period?
How does the culture of the time period impact the behavior and ideas presented in the film?
If using a futuristic film, use the current time period (2019) to make assumptions about why the "future" looks the way that it does in the film. Refer to relevant events, culture, and ideologies of our current time period that have shaped the future.
Avoid including irrelevant information in this section. Historical events should only be mentioned if they are directly connected to events or issues in the film/series. Synthesize and summarize the most important and relevant historical events and conditions that shape the film.
Major Sociological Perspective : Drawing from the major ideas and issues in the film, identify a major sociological perspective (functionalist, symbolic interaction, conflict, feminist) that aligns. Discuss how the perspective can be used to interpret the film. Consider the following questions (you do not have to directly answer each question):
What are the assumptions of the perspective?
What aspects of the film should be considered using this perspective?
What specific questions can be asked using this perspective?
