Questions:

  • How does the application of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide affect the rate of reaction of a catalase within a liver?
  • How does the application of different temperatures affect the rate of reaction of catalase within a liver?

Case Study:

If a piece of liver was added to a 30% concentration, the time that it will take for the reaction to reach the top of a 15mL test tube will be the quickest when the concentration at this concentration, as the catalase will react more aggressively due to the increased presence of hydrogen peroxide. As the concentration decreases from 30% to 24%, the rate of the reaction will be delayed by 5 seconds and will continue to delay by 5 seconds as the concentration decreases, therefore 30% concentration will be the optimal concentration.
If the sample of liver is sitting at the optimal temperature of 37?, the rate of reaction will be the fastest, so the time taken to reach a height of 15cm will be the fastest. If the temperature is above or below the optimum temperature, then the rate of reaction will be lower. As the temperature moves further away from 37°C, the rate of the reaction will decrease.
