Joan Didion, "Notes from a Native Daughter" and Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird
Task I
You'll need to watch three (3) short clips from the 2017 film Lady Bird, a movie about a young woman who lives in Sacramento and her complicated relationship with her mother as she finishes high school. Throughout the film, Lady Bird, the title character, feels there is a greater adventure out there waiting for her, something can't quite be fulfilled by staying in Sacramento or even California.
Scene 1: Lady Bird's mother finds out she applied to university in New York City without telling her family.
Scene 2: Lady Bird goes to the airport to leave for university in New York City.
Scene 3: Lady Bird calls her mother from New York City. This is the final scene of the film.
Task II
In "Notes from a Native Daughter," Didion concludes by saying, "Perhaps in retrospect this has been a story not about Sacramento at all, but about the things we lose and the promises we break as we grow older..."
