RESEARCH/ INTEGRATION PAPER
First Year and Second Year Residents
The completion and presentation of a research /integration paper during the fourth unit of the residency is an opportunity for the resident to demonstrate developing clinical competence, the use of appropriate theoretical and theological material for understanding the human situation, and ability to reflect upon and integrate one's personal and vocational pilgrimage. There are four parts to this assignment.
The research aspect of the assignment is designed to foster original and creative contributions to the field of pastoral care, and specifically, contributions that draw primarily on the action-reflection model of experiential learning. Research includes the definition of a significant question or issue to be explored, a design for investigating the question, and conclusions drawn from the investigation.
Research methodologies may include a critical analysis and review of relevant pastoral care literature, systematic observation in the clinical setting or designs elaborated in Larry Vandercreek, A Research Primer in Pastoral Care and Counseling.
Any research that involves interventions with patients or issues of confidentiality requires educational approval before proceeding. In some instances, a hospital committee approval may be required as well.
The integration aspect of the assignment should reflect the integration of personal growth, clinical experience, and theoretical reflection. One way to get at this is to ask:
How does my practice of ministry in this area grow out of my personal history and dynamics? How is my practice informed and critiqued by theoretical and theological reflection? The paper should suggest ways that pastoral care ministry may be enhanced.
Format of the paper should reflect graduate-level quality in composition and clarity of thought, is appropriately footnoted, and with bibliography included.
There is no length requiremen; substantive reflection is more important. These papers may become part of an indexed collection of pastoral care papers available to hospital personnel, departmental staff, future residents and others that may use The Center's pastoral care library.
Therefore, personal references (to self as well as others) should be qualified in light of potential circulation beyond one's educator and immediate peer group.
Presentation will ordinarily be made to peers and educators in July prior to final evaluations. Copies should be made available to peers and educators prior to the presentation of the paper.
