The aim of this writing assignment is to determine your comprehension of some of the fundamental concepts found within the Hindu tradition that we have explored thus far. It requires that you draw from and cite all relevant course material (lectures, films, readings) from Modules 1-7 in order to develop a well-rounded response that demonstrates your understanding of and engagement with these materials. It must be 1000-1500 words in length (approximately 2-3 pages single spaced, 12pt font).
A bibliography and proper citation in Chicago Style are requirements.
Essay Prompt
Using your course materials as reference write a cohesive, well-organized, well written essay that answers both of the following questions:
Question 1) How does the Hindu concept of karma relate to the varna system, samsara and moksa?
Question 2) Explain how karma, samsara and the varna system inform dharma.
In your essay be sure to define karma, samsara, moksa, varna system, and dharma (in your own words versus a direct quotation as this will better demonstrate your comprehension of the terms themselves). You should also include a discussion of the development of these key concepts (where and how they emerged - which text, historical period, context, etc.).
General Assignment Guidelines
Your assignment will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Content and development - how well you understand the concepts that are central to the Hindu tradition and how effectively you utilize course material to answer the question(s) posed of you.
Academic writing style and focus - it is important that you treat the Hindu tradition in an unbiased manner in an effort to cultivate a greater understanding of the diversity that exists within this tradition. As such, you should aim to maintain an unbiased tone in your writing. Further, you should present your discussion in a clear, concise manner and avoid introducing material that is irrelevant to your topic. This is an important skill to develop that contributes greatly to a well-defined and focused piece.
Organization, structure and format - present your discussion in a manner that has a logical flow. For example, if in your introduction you state that you will be discussing A, B and C, then you should discuss these items in the order that you have initially stated them. In addition, you should use properly formatted citations.
Mechanically Correct - proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
