Many Americans are seen as outspoken, highly independent, and self-sufficient. However, these types of cultural attributes and behaviors are relatively rare outside of the U.S. For example, Irish, Japanese, and Chinese culture tends to be more collectively or socially orientated. Consequently, these cultures tend to emphasize family and group needs over individual needs and, typically, behave in public in such a way as to not upset the social harmony.

  • How does culture shape social problems? Consider social problems that exist in the U.S. but not necessarily elsewhere or vice versa.
