1.) Newly Elected Representative to Vote on PATRIOT Act Renewal

You have been recently elected to Congress for your district, beating out an incumbent who was in place for more than 20 years. You ran on a platform of protecting civil liberties for your constituents, and you spoke out regularly against the PATRIOT Act when campaigning. Early in your term, you decide to reach out to the many community and law enforcement organizations in your district as a way to learn about their concerns. When speaking to local city police departments, as well as the sheriffs in your district, you begin to hear about some of the activities they deem necessary to fight crime-namely, those afforded via the PATRIOT Act. While still against the act in principle, you begin to at least understand the point of view of many in the law enforcement community who support the act's provisions. Later in your term, the PATRIOT Act is up for renewal. How do you think you will vote on the PATRIOT Act's renewal? How would you defend your decision to your many different constituent groups?
