In its modern usage, the word of term 'myth' is often used as a synonym for 'lie' or untruth; however, in the study of religion, this word is used differently. Using your own understanding of the concept, my definition below, and our readings regarding myth, how do you think myths function in a religious context? Are they good for us -- or as some say - a virus that stunts our society/culture? Are they simply 'childish'?
A Reminder: Myths are not there to prove to everyone that dragons exist, rather, myths are there to demonstrate that dragons can be defeated.

"The theologian Paul Tillich said that a symbol participates in that which it symbolized. It not only points in the right directions but calls up feelings, memories, idea, and even aspirations associated with that object." How is that a 'magic doorway', and can you think of a symbol that functions like this in your own personal life?
