Case Study: You are the instructional designer and training coordinator for a national insurance corporation. Recently this corporation purchased a large regional provider with approximately 350 employees. As part of this merger, approximately 100 employee mostly in an older demographic, were told that their jobs were being eliminated. In the separation agreement, the corporation agreed to provide skills training for any employees who were being let go. You have been asked to design the training sessions for these employees. You know that this is a tense and stressful situation and that you will need to make sure that you are designing instruction that fits this specific population.

Questions:

1. Given the demographic of this group, what learning theory (or theories) do you think most likely influenced their previous learning experiences? How would this information affect the way you develop this training?

2. Given what you know about problem based learning, what types of activities might be valuable in helping these employees learn a new (or updated) set of skills?

3. How do you think attitudes may affect the training sessions? What things might you build into the training sessions to help mitigate any issues?
