Problem: In this case the patient evidently has a substance misuse problem. The patient has gone to multiple healthcare providers without them knowing and getting prescribed benzodiazepines which is considered a controlled substance. This common practice by the patient can be described as, "doctor shopping which entails the scheduling by patients of office visits with multiple clinicians for the same agenda, either for a continuing illness or to procure prescription drugs illicitly." (Sansone, R. A., & Sansone, L. A., 2012) The findings should be addressed with the patient and try to understand the patients explanation for her actions. How do you address the findings in #1 with the patient and what kind of teaching would you provide? It is essential that we address the patient about her tendency of "Doctor Shopping", and try to find out the patients motive behind her behavior. It is important to understand first if the patients rationale behind the "Doctor Shopping" is based on finding the right clinician in a new area or if its solely based on suspicious of addiction. You can begin the conversation as follows, "We noticed through the prescription monitoring program database that you have been prescribed benzodiazepines by different providers.
