Problem

Whereas thematic analysis focuses on gathering trends and searching for recurring themes, narrative analysis focuses on the individual's and their stories behind the events, it is a qualitative research method examining how individuals construct, sequence and communicate their personal experiences. This makes it a useful tool in exploring how an individual makes sense of their participation in the events of 2011. The stories 'are not only told through interviews but through diaries, journals blog posts and social media posts' (Yeates et. al., p. 83). The strength of this method of research is its ability to highlight the meaning behind an individual's acts and the history or steps of what bought them to participate in the riots, it also highlights a unique perspective to every story that is told. Research like this shows why interviews are so useful-they reveal the real stories behind public events, not just statistics or media narratives. However, this approach too also has its limitations, it is time-consuming and when working with a large number of interviewees can be not only costly, but can lead to interpretations being skewed and because narrative analysis focuses less on the recurring themes and patterns of the research it can be less reliable in bringing these themes together and limiting the ability to generalise acts and categorise them under reasoning and behaviour.
