Case Study: The cardiovascular system and respiratory system are intertwined. A problem with one will cause a problem in the other. It can be a challenge to determine what came first, a heart problem or a lung problem. Last week you learned about the structure and function of the heart and vascular system. This week you are learning the same about the respiratory system.

Questions: Apply what you have learned about these systems to explain if a disease is cardiac or respiratory in origin.
Include the following aspects in the discussion:

  • How do the blood, cardiovascular, muscular and respiratory systems all contribute to respiration?
  • What will happen in the lungs if the heart fails as a pump (congestive heart failure)?
  • What will happen in the heart if the pressure in the lungs increases (pulmonary hypertension)?
  • What unhealthy lifestyle behaviors impact the heart and lung?
