Assignment - Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
Learning outcomes - On completion of this unit a learner should:
1. Understand the key features of health and safety legislation and regulations.
2. Know how to identify and control hazards in the workplace.
3. Be able to carry out a risk assessment, identifying control measures.
4. Understand the methods used when reporting and recording accidents and incidents.
Scenario: You are working as a Health and Safety officer for and Engineering Company, called Jost UK Ltd.
As a Health and Safety Officer your responsibilities include:
- Performing risk assessments
- Carrying out site inspections
- Ensuring that all staff are provided with a safe and secure environment to work in.
- Enforcing health and safety laws and regulations.
- Providing guidance on safety equipment and the safe installation of new machinery.
As a part of your job you have to train the newly joined employees to practice work in different circumstances and asses the health and safety situations there. For this you have to give them sample assessments at the end of the training session.
As a health and safety officer you have to work on the following tasks with them before assessing them.
Tasks -
1. Explain the consequences of management not abiding by health and safety legislation and regulation, in your workplace.
2. Discuss the importance of carrying out all parts of risk assessment in a suitable manner, in your workplace.
3. Explain how different control measures are used to prevent accidents at your workplace.
4. Justify the methods you have used to deal with hazards and control risks. Explain how they follow workplace policies and legal requirements.
5. An employee at your workplace was transporting boxes from the trolley to the designated shelf. He accidentally tripped over a hammer on the floor and, unfortunately, fell over and fractured his arm. Also, 2 boxes fell on him causing him a back injury.
- Determine the actual cost of this accident.
- Undertake your own research, making extensive use of the Internet to seek information on accident rates, incidents and the cost of accidents.
Note - All the tasks need to be completed and all work needs to be referenced. Some diagrams could be used if required.
