Homework: The Differences in Healthcare Service Quality

In this major project, you will put your research from the previous module into action! After spending so much time investigating your research questions, you have built knowledge and credibility. Now that you have spent some time finding the best and most relevant research about your topic and have begun to think about how your sources "speak to" each other, you will use this knowledge to argue a particular position for a specific audience. In this module, you will learn how to communicate your informed perspective, shaping your material to suit your purpose and the needs of your audience.

Your work in this project will give you experience doing something that many, if not all of you will do in the future (if you aren't already doing it now!): crafting digital content for publication on the web. By learning to read and compose within multiple genres and to make design and style choices with various audiences and situations in mind, you are learning to be flexible, modern writers. In the 21st century, developing skills to create in a variety of media is crucial for the job market, and learning to adapt your writing for different audiences and contexts is THE way to demonstrate mastery of the art of rhetoric.

Task: Write a persuasive web article that makes an argument about your topic to a specific audience, using the research you've gathered.

Audience: You'll want to select an audience that makes sense for your particular research topic, the research you have conducted, and the stance you are taking. For example, if your web article is arguing for policy change relevant to a particular topic, then your specific audience should be a group who has the ability to impact policy. Or, if you believe that your topic requires action from a specific demographic, such as people your age, you should keep that audience in mind.

Purpose: Your persuasive web article has three goals: (i) inform your specific audience on important background context and information they need to understand your topic, (ii) take a stance on the topic/issue you've researched, and (iii) persuade your audience to agree with your stance. You'll also want to use research effectively enough that you are convincing your secondary audience, your teacher, that you are making this argument based on the research that you have done.

Genre: A web article is a broad genre of text that encompasses many different purposes, audiences and platforms. For example, a newspaper article, a blog, and a magazine article all qualify as example web articles. One thing they have in common is that they are usually persuasive, and they synthesize sources to present the argument to writers. In other words, the writers of these texts don't organize the writing by discussing one source, then the next, then the next. Instead, the writers decide what they want to argue and they use the information they've gathered to support their conclusions.

This reflection is a chance for you to reflect on your process composing your web text for Unit 3. Note that the reflection is a significant part of your grade for the Unit 3 project, as described on the homework sheet. Therefore, you should take the time to think carefully about what you learned and submit a polished, revised text.

Importantly, I want you to organize this reflection to paragraphs, and have each paragraph focus on ideas you want to share. You do not need to answer every single question listed below. Instead, look over the questions below, come up with a few main ideas that you want to focus on in your reflection, and develop those main ideas into paragraphs with details and examples. You can see an example reflection on page 129 of your textbook. It's longer than yours needs to be, but it will show you how the paragraphs are structured.

Task

Discuss the specific rhetorical situation of your Unit 3 text (in other words, the audience, purpose, and genre). For example, you could consider the following:

A. What is your specific purpose and who is your specific audience for your unit 3 project?

B. Why did you feel that this purpose and audience made sense given the research results you are communicating?

C. How did the genre assigned impact how you communicated your message?

D. Discuss your design choices for your Unit 3 text.

E. In what ways did you incorporate visual elements, and in what ways are these design choices effective for your audience and/or purpose? Here, you might discuss your use of graphics, photographs, colors, font style, font size, or other visual elements.

F. In what ways did you consider your audience's reading experience when designing your unit 3 project? Here, you might discuss spacing, layout, structure, and/or organization.

G. In what ways were your design choices influenced by the particular genre in which you were working?

H. What ethos do you want to communicate to your audience, and how do your design choices support this? For instance, do your design choices show that you are professional? Friendly and approachable? Educated and informed? Something else?

I. Discuss the way you integrated research into your Unit 3 Text.

J. In what specific way(s) did you incorporate hyperlinks into your Unit 3 project? How did you decide what information to hyperlink? What impact do you think this has on your audience's reading experience? How do the hyperlinks help to bolster your credibility as a researcher and writer?

K. Explain how your research process continued as you crafted your Unit 3 Project. For example, did you discover knowledge "gaps" that you needed to resolve? Are there ideas and conclusions you ended up including in your web text that you did not anticipate when you first started the research process? Did you have any early ideas that ended up being challenged and/or proven inaccurate by your research?

L. Discuss how you want your readers to view You, the author

M. How would you describe your voice in this draft? Why? What language choices help the readers hear you?

N. How do you convince your readers to care about your selected topic?

O. How do you help the readers identify with you and with your interests and priorities?

P. Discuss your Progress as a Writer and Your Writing Process

Q. What did you learn about yourself and your own writing process as you completed this project?

R. What are the most important revision choices you made?

S. How did feedback from peers or instructor shape your revision?

T. If you had more time, how would you revise your work?

U. What do you see as the primary strength of this text?

V. In what specific ways was composing this research-based web text different from writing a traditional research paper? What are some of the specific skills you think you gained and/or strengthened as a result of completing your research in this digital genre? Here, you might discuss your experiences researching, composing, designing, and/or revising the web text.
