Instructions
Write a portfolio reflection of 1000 to 1500 words providing a detailed account of what specific activities and experiences you have accomplished to master the competency below.
The reflection should be submitted to your professor for feedback. Also, upload your artifacts to your portfolio so your professor can review them along with your reflection.
Instructions:
Read the definition of the Competency and behaviors below. Reflect on all your completed homeworks thus far in the MSW program, including field practicum. Select at least 2 homework examples that demonstrate proficiency of the competency and a minimum of 1 example from your field practicum.
Follow the guidelines of the Reflective Homework on Social Work Competency Demonstration and submit a well-developed draft of your reflection. The final reflection will be due Week 15.
Competency: Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice (Mental Health)
Clinical social workers in mental health recognize it is important to practice policy development and advocate for social justice and improved access to mental health services for clients. Social workers are aware of and can navigate policies and laws specifically related to mental health systems. Clinical social workers understand how to address racism, classism, and discrimination and advocate to eliminate oppressive structural barriers. Social workers recognize it is critical to advocate for inclusive services and equity in treatment for mental health. Clinical social workers understand and work to prevent poverty, realizing that economic and social mobility are hindered by forces of oppression.
Clinical social workers understand the latent functions of deinstitutionalization that may still have lingering impacts on service systems and which clients get served (and which do not) today. Social workers in mental health:
A. Advocate fair and just policies to increase access to services within specialized areas of practice
B. Advocate for laws, which have promoted human rights and social justice and supported those that have been hindered by Ableism and other forms of systemic injustice
C. Engage professionally with key stakeholders in advocating for social causes within specialized areas of practice systems
