Discussion
This week's discussion will focus on the transatlantic slave trade and the experiences of enslaved people. We will think critically about the ways that enslave people were commoditized within the system of slavery.

Assignment Objective
Students will analyze primary and secondary sources and synthesize them with lecture content to provide their own interpretation of the material. Please answer two of the following prompts and then respond to two colleagues.

Primary Source Deep Analysis: Discuss enslaved people's experience of the Middle Passage. Use lecture to contextualize and analyze evidence from Equiano's account. What moments from Equiano's account stand out to you, and why? Remember to include parenthetical citations.
Reading for Secondary Source Arguments: How does Mustakeem's article help you evaluate the process of commoditization and trauma in the Middle Passage? Use lecture to contextualize and analyze at least two examples from the Mustakeem article. Remember to incorporate parenthetical citations.
Synthesizing Materials: Using whatever combination of assigned primary and secondary sources you would like, how did colonial laws help to create racial difference and the notion of permanent, inheritable, chattel slavery? Please provide examples from at least two assigned sources and contextualize with evidence from lecture. Be sure to include parenthetical citations.
Visual Analysis: Evaluate the differences between the John White watercolors and the Theodore de Brye engravings from lecture. Why do you think de Brye altered White's images? Did the White and de Brye images make different visual arguments about colonization, Native Americans, and the North American landscape? How does the racialization of Native Americans affect emerging concepts of race and the view of African bodies?
