The Modelling Objectives for Chapter 7-El Nino and La Nina: climate prediction from tropical oceans
1. Modelling "Literacy"You should be able to explain by the completion of this chapter(a) How descriptive models differ from process-based models(b) How statistical modelling differs from theoretical modelling(c) The relevance of statistical modelling for enhancing understanding atom natural stems
2. Graphing(a) You should be able to produce with the aid of a computer and by hand (for small data sets). graphical displays of tabulated data(b) You should be able to interpret key features of a graphical data summary from both a mathematical perspective. and in the context of the natural system being investigated(c) By visually inspecting graphical display(s) you should be able to suggest plausible statistical models that underpin the observed data patterns Equivalently, you should be able to recognize descriptive models that are inappropriate for describing the observed data patterns
3. Fitting the Model to Data(a) With the aid of a computer you should be able to calculate the parameters of a model using the method of least squares(b) You should be able to interpret the results of statistical modelling from both a mathematical perspective and in the context of the natural system being investigated
4. Assessing the Quality of a Fitted Model(a) You should be able to produce (with assistance from a computer) and describe how a correlation coefficient can be used to assess the quality of a fitted model(0) You should know (I) what a residual is and 00 how residuals are calculated
5. Using Statistical Modelling to Make Predictions Given a least squares regression model the you should be able to(a) make predications about a natural system. and(b) gauge the quality of those predictions
