Rutherford 's Planetary Model of the Atom In 1911, Ernest Rutherford developed a planetary model of the atom, in which a small positively charged nucleus is orbited by electrons. The model was motivated by an experiment carried out by Rutherford and his graduate students, Geiger and Marsden. In this experiment, they fired alpha particles with an initial speed of 1.55x107m/s at a thin sheet of gold. (Alpha particles are obtained from certain radioactive decays. They have a charge of +2e and a mass of 6.64x10-27kg.)
How close can the alpha particles get to a gold nucleus (charge=+79e), assuming the nucleus remains stationary? (This calculation sets an upper limit on the size of the gold nucleus. See Chapter 31 of the textbook for further details.)
A charge of 190 µC is at the center of a cube of edge 75.0 cm. No other charges are nearby. Find the total flux through each face of the cube
A 4.20 kg sphere makes a perfectly inelastic collision with a second sphere that is initially at rest, What is the mass of the second sphere
A household water supply taps off the water main. The tap is a copper tube with a 1inch inside diameter. What will the flow be from the pipe
for uniform circular motion describe how the speed velocity and acceleration change with time. for each vector quantity
The bar stays vertical throughout the push. The bar starts at the rail's vertex and is pushed at a steady 0.40 m/s to the left. If the magnetic field strength is 0.42 T, what is the average emf induced in the bar between the points which cross the..
The heating coil of a hot-water heater has a resistance of 20.0 and operates at 210 V. If electrical energy costs $0.080/kWh, what does it cost to raise 290 kg of water in the tank from 15 °C to 74° C.

A projectile is launched with aninitial speed of 60 m/s at an angle of 60 degrees. It lands on ahillside 4 seconds later. What is the straight line distance to where it lands
A point charge q1 = -4.00 nC is at the point x = 0.60 m, y = 0.80 m, and a second point charge q2 = +6.00 nC is at the point x = 0.60 m, y = 0. Compute the magnitude of the net electric field at the origin due to these two point charges.
