Assignment
Within our Ornstein, Levine, & Gutek text, an overview of policy reports was provided. The purpose of these reports is to make practical recommendations and guidance for educational leaders. These reports are based on survey behavior and analysis of data but are only a starting place for educators. Decisions made at the federal and state level are sometimes disconnected from the "real work" of classroom instruction and school culture.
After reading and annotating the ASCD InfoBrief, make a connection between the public's interest in education and the goals and objectives outlined in Ornstein, Levine, & Gutek chapter thirteen and specifically the table: Overview 13.1. Utilizing personal pronouns or examples from your teaching experience is encouraged.
I. Introduction
A. What elements or services provide the main reason(s) public education is public.
B. Provide evidence from sources and compile an overview for anyone seeking to understand what defines public education within society.
II. Body
A. Which elements referenced in the ASCD Info Brief could be implemented within the elements listed in overview 13.1?
B. Provide explicit examples for how certain levels of the educational structure (I.e. teachers, task forces, unit plan, specific objectives, etc.) could potentially influence positive change and bring democracy and public education into the conversations and resources.
III. Conclusion
A. What obstacles or social norms do you perceive as potentially stalling or resisting the role of public education for all students?
B. How could teachers, policy makers, or educational leaders could avoid or minimize the impact of such obstacles or social issues. What change could occur at what level to help all students within public education?
