Integrative modalities paper

Topic: Chronic Pain

Purpose: To review the evidence for a specific integrative modality and its application in practice.

Learning Outcomes: Determine the risks and benefits of an integrative modality for a specific illness.

Guidelines: Students sign up to review an integrative modality which may be used as an intervention for a specific disorder studied in this course. Describe the modality using scholarly literature and its use in theory/practice. Review the evidence for/against use with particular attention to benefit/risk, cost and access. APA format (7th edition) should be used throughout the paper. The paper should include the following information although these do not have to be the section headings:

1. Description of the integrative modality: what it is, how it is used

2. Review of the evidence: nursing, medical, allied health

3. Specific illness/disorder for which the modality is used: describe symptoms, physical findings, disease processes

4. Discussion of risks/benefits/strength of evidence: costs, side effects, comparison to traditional treatment, ethical issues, barriers (lack of prescribers, coverage, difficulty finding the product), etc.

5. Review of diagnostics: when using the integrative modality, does the patient require any testing/follow- up/evaluation?

6. Discussion of holistic management: how can/should this integrative modality be integrated into care? Role of the NP?

7. Summary statement: brief review of main points including recommendations for practice

The body of the paper should be no more than 5 double-spaced, typewritten pages in length (12 pt print, 1 inch margins on all sides). Papers are submitted in a word document via assignment tab in BB. An example of a well written paper is provided in the module tab.

Method of assessment:

The point is to focus on a specific modality and then look at how that modality may affect certain diagnosis, patients overall health, and your practice as an NP, etc.

1. Description of the integrative modality: what it is, how it is used, brief history of when it was first discovered or used

2. Review of the evidence: nursing, medical, allied health (has if been used in the past and what have they found in its use)

3. Specific illness/disorder for which the modality is used: describe symptoms, physical findings, disease processes that it is used to treat

5. Review of diagnostics: when using the integrative modality, does the patient require any testing/follow- up/evaluation?

6. Discussion of holistic management: how can/should this integrative modality be integrated into care? Role of the NP?

7. Summary statement: brief review of main points including recommendations for practice.
