Popular culture can definitely influence society's perceptions of religion, race, gender, sexuality, and morality. Mainly because we are surrounded by it whether we are aware of it or not. Social media, television, movies, celebrities etc. These factors all influence society's perceptions.
Popular culture's role in emphasizing stereotypes in my opinion would be very detrimental. For example, let's think about the number one factor: social media. I do believe that popular culture has the potential to reinforce and break down popular stereotypes. Social media plays a big part in popular culture and how it is transformed. For example, I follow this Instagram page that post funny cartoons about the different stereotypes in each generation ie; gen z, millennials, baby boomers etc.
A unique example from pop culture of a counter-dominant portrayal of gender, race, or religion can be described as the movie called Mulan. According to (Somvichian-Clausen, 2022), "The original cartoon version is a retelling of a popular Chinese folk tale, centering around a young woman who has reached the age where she is expected to find a husband, with the aid of a strict matchmaker. Instead, posing as a man, she sets off to war, a crime punishable by death, to protect her ailing father from entering the mandatory draft. It's full of catchy songs, a hilarious dragon sidekick voiced by Eddie Murphy and a triumphant feel-good ending."
