Responding to a Point of View on Literacy
In the next 12 weeks you will consider what creates a foundation for literacy and how universal literacy can contribute to a foundation for a better world. The course introduction and the introduction to each module include quotes from individuals and organizations regarding these complementary views of literacy.
Start this week by reading the quote below:
"Literacy is not a luxury; it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century, we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens."
- Bill Clinton, 42nd U.S. President (1993-2001), on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1994
As you reflect on this quote-and drawing on your current knowledge of literacy issues and fundamentals-ponder:
What do President Clinton's words mean to you?
What is the power of literacy expressed in his view?
What ideas, insights, misconceptions, and/or challenges with regard to literacy does this quote bring to mind?
How can literacy "harness" energy and creativity?
How does this quote relate to and/or how can it inspire your work with young children and families?
How do you view this quote, delivered in 1994, from the vantage point of today? Do you believe this quote is still relevant today? Why or why not?
With President Clinton's words and your own thoughts in mind, follow the instructions below for this Discussion.
