"One story that greatly impacts me each time I read it is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. This story is an excellent salvific tool to fulfill the Great Commission by showing the exact opposite of what God expects His children to do and how they are to behave. Jesus made it clear in Luke 10:25 (AMPC) when he was asked by a lawyer what he must do "to partake of eternal salvation in the Messiah's kingdom", that "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, ... and ‘your neighbor as yourself'" (Luke 25:27 NKJV). The characters in "The Lottery" from Old Man Warner to Tessie Hutchinson, showed absolutely no compassion for their neighbors as they participated in the mindless ritual of stoning the lottery winner year after year. If even one of these villagers were a disciple of Christ, he would have openly protested against this horror. Christians are to love God and defend their neighbors."
