Question
My three highest occupational interest areas are Social, Conventional, and Realistic. I fit into social as it states "Cooperative environments, supporting, helping, healing/nurturing," because all of those describe who I am and my current role at work. I always knew I wanted to work with children, through teaching Elementary. As I went on my own journey using behavioral health services, I came to a realization that I could broaden my options and learn more about being of service to people. Most of the careers listed under social fall along the lines of educator, medical personnel, and behavioral health service. The areas of interest I most relate to. I enjoy helping others and being a nurturer. Being the oldest of 4 and having to always look out for my younger siblings has taught me about being self-less and being of service. I have a calm aura about me that people point out which makes it easy for me to help others. Especially working with the population I am working with now. It helps to have that healing, nurturing aura. It can be very chaotic and stressful at times.
It's ironic that the career that falls under SCR is a Medical Assistant. Recently, my sister and I had a conversation about both taking classes to become Medical Assistants. There's a high need for health employees back on our reservation and determining which major or career path would benefit us is what we always keep in mind. I could see myself doing that however I am more passionate about becoming an educator and/or counselor.
These tests furthermore confirm why I chose the career path I have chosen. Social being the one I scored the highest on most of the tests. Teaching, giving advice, and helping and being of service to people is what I've been doing the longest. I scored high in Realistic and most of those jobs are mechanical, practical, hands on, and tool oriented. I always thought I'd follow in my father's footsteps as far as career choice. He is a master carpenter along with many other trades such as electrician, plumber and so on. I'm thankful he taught me a lot of what he mastered. It is something I can fall back on.
