Anne was diagnosed with sickle-cell anemia when she was four years old. The disease is caused by a mutation in the gene that directs the manufacture of blood protein hemoglobin. Her abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become stuck in the capillaries, blocking blood flow and delivery of oxygen to tissues and organs.
