Context

Nationalism is the policy or doctrine of asserting the interests of one's own nation as separate from the interests of other nations or the common interests of all nations. Nationalism is a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country, often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries. It is a desire by a large group of people to form a separate and independent nation of their own, and it is primary political loyalty to "our nation" and "our state" because we are familiar with it.

Technological changes have expanded at a rate unimaginable to many. Because of technological advancements, states, nations, businesses, and the world have seen changes in economics, the exchange of money, cultural amalgamation, the exchange of information, the speed of commerce and communication, and more. People are connecting across state borders more easily and quickly than ever before. Technological innovations such as the Internet, jet travel, and other advances are changing the way in which the world exists and operates.

Alternative political orientations are not new, but they have grown in the past half century thanks to the advancements in technology, travel, communication, et al. As such, human interaction and political identification are moving beyond traditional national boundaries and are developing myriad regional and global links.

Transnationalism is one such alternative concept. Transnationalism is a phenomenon and scholarly research agenda grown out of the heightened interconnectivity between people and the receding economic and social significance of boundaries among nation states (Rourke & Boyer, 2010, p. 102). As you progress in this course, you might consider how you connect to the world, states, nationalism, and politics in general and if your personal connections and views have, or are, changing.

Assessment Instructions

Borders between countries are becoming less important as the interconnectivity among people all over the world increases. Travel, the Internet, economic trade, and immigration all blur the lines between countries and decrease the cultural and social differences among people. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are examples of institutions that work across borders and also contribute to this trend of transnationalism. Stemming from nationalism, which was the traditional view, transnationalism is the current view on world politics.

For this assessment, investigate transnationalism in greater detail and explore NGOs and how they relate to transnationalism and global politics.
