Because it values caring relationships more than hard-and-fast rules and principles, some critics (mostly male) have doubted whether care ethics can be realistically applied or implemented in the modern workplace. Their argument is that in order to operate effectively a competitive workplace must have clearly defined responsibilities and policies and not depend on an assumed atmosphere of goodwill or on vague, subjective considerations of nurturing and empathy. Is this a fair criticism? Does it reflect a male bias? Do you think that the contemporary workplace can be improved (or has it perhaps already been improved) by incorporating insights and perspectives from care ethics?
