Hand-cranked generator and bulb
The purpose of a generator is to transform energy transferred to it via the contact push/pull interaction into energy that can operate electrical devices (via the electric circuit interaction). A hand-cranked generator produces energy when a person turns the handle. (Commercial generators use falling water or steam to 'turn the handle.') Like all operating electrical devices, the generator also warms up while it is producing energy, up to its operating temperature.
Watch a movie (UEM L6 Movie 2) of a person hooking up a generator to a light bulb (in a socket) and then turning the generator handle to light the bulb. Let's look at this situation more carefully. To start with, there is a small increase in temperature of the muscles of the person turning the generator handle; there is also a small increase in temperature in the generator itself; and, of course, the generator handle initially starts at rest and increases its speed. However, after a very short period, the person, generator, and bulb have reached constant operating temperatures (which are higher than the surroundings) and the generator handle is now turning at constant speed.
Fill in the following G/R energy diagram that describes the flow of energy through the system of interacting objects including the person, generator, bulb, light receivers, and the surroundings. Assume the person, generator, and bulb are at constant temperatures.
Using your diagram as a guide, I need to submit a statement of conservation of energy for this system.
