GNED 1317 Human Rights - Durham College
Assignment
Description:
The final paper is half research paper and half argumentative paper - i.e. you will need to research a human rights issue and advance an argument about that issue. Be specific! The more specific you are about the issue and your argument the better your paper will be. For example, instead of writing simply about ‘women's rights' write about women's rights in the context of pay inequality in Ontario and the policies best suited to defeat it. You have the choice of writing on any topic you believe is a current human rights issue. This can be a topic we covered in the course, or will cover, or some other topic you find interesting.
Instructions:
1. Choose a human rights issues: As we have seen there is an abundance of human rights issues. Look over the course outline to review what we've covered. You may find some ideas there. Also, you are free to write on topics you covered in your first assignment, with much more specificity, of course. Again, be specific! Many of you submitted your proposal and had your topic vetted, so you are ready to start writing!
2. Research: The proposal asked for a minimum of 5 credible sources, but for the final paper you will need a minimum of 8 credible sources that you believe to be relevant to your issue. Include a variety of sources. Aim for a mixture of books, peer reviewed articles, credible news sources, and information from NGOs. DO NOT include blogs, or other questionable internet sources, including Wikipedia or internet encyclopedias. These are not academically appropriate.
3. Format: Your essay should be written formally in full sentences and paragraphs, the use of in-text citations, and along with your name, date, word count., should include a detailed works cited or reference page. See instructions below for reference page.
Length: ~2000 words, approximately 8-10 pages typed, double spaced.
Reference page: Cite your sources with whichever style you are comfortable (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago).
