Gerontological population experiences

Scenario

The gerontological population experiences difficulty with resolving infection due to their aged immune system alone, so when compounded with a lack of integumentary protection they are at an even higher risk of morbidity and mortality due to infection. Some elderly individuals experience age-related lung comorbidities at baseline which can be further compromised by an inhaled or physical burn injury. Despite several decades of advances in burn care, individuals over the age of 65 are extremely likely to die from burns great than 35% of total body surface area. With infection increasing tissue injury at the burn site, healing is further impaired when the respiratory system is compromised because it can lead to respiratory failure and inadequate tissue perfusion.

QUESTION

Why do you think that older adults with burns develop infection and are extremely likely to die from burns greater than 35% of total body surface area.
