GEOG5255 Geodemographics & Neighbourhood Analysis - University of Leeds
Aim of the assignment
This is a project using a real world dataset and scenario for you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge discussed during this module and used in computer practicals.
Assignment brief
Fire analysis in South Wales
You have been engaged by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to analyse fire data in South Wales; specifically various types of fire during the period 1st Jan 2000 - 31st Dec 2004. The fire service previously collaborated with Corcoran et al. (2007) for an analysis of fire incidence in South Wales. Subsequent discussions between the fire service and authors have suggested some further techniques which may usefully be employed.
The client is keen for you to use fire data to explore spatial patterns by classifying areas at risk from fire across South Wales. You are to use relevant analysis methods and report on findings so that the fire service is better informed. The client stresses that these data are confidential and are not to be shared outside of the University of Leeds nor the results published without their permission.
Data availability
The fire service have provided the following data files:
Geographic fire locations: GIS polygon file south_wales_wards01.shp
• These are the wards used for the dissemination of the 2001 Census. The rate of fires by four types (defined below) is recorded for each ward in the attribute table.
Statistical information: Fire-types-sociodem.sav
• A file with fire data for 2000-04 aggregated into the 2001 Census Ward geography. In addition to rates of fire per ward by the four types, this file also has a range of area attributes relating to socio-economic and household data. The variables are percentages and relate to 2001.
