Learning outcome: Genetics has important implications in society - agriculture, medicine, forensics, conservation etc and many fields of research. For this reason, when a new genetic discovery is made, the results are often conveyed to the general public in the news (traditional and social media). We will be discussing more about Genetics and Society (G & S) in Module 4 once we have learned more about molecular genetics and genomics. For this G&S activity, you will learn more about science journalism, how research is communicated and will understand the science behind the genetic discoveries that impact our lives!
Directions: For this activity, you will find a recent " news report" (last five years) that conveyed genetic news to the public, then you will research the "source" of the information (see next section), and you will explain the "science behind the news report" to your classmates in one paragraph. I post an example below, and I will use several examples in the "sources" section so you can see the different ways that science is conveyed to the public. Choose something you are interested in!
