Question

One example of the Fundamental Attribution Error happened during my internship. A client arrived late to several appointments, and some people quickly assumed that the client was irresponsible or did not care about receiving services. However, after speaking with the client, we learned that he depended on public transportation and was also dealing with family responsibilities that sometimes made it difficult to arrive on time. This situation is an example of the Fundamental Attribution Error because people focused on the client's behavior being late without considering the outside factors that may have caused it. They assumed the problem was the client's personality or attitude rather than the challenges the client was facing. One benefit of this type of thinking is that it allows people to make quick judgments about situations. However, the downside is that those judgments are not always accurate. In this case, people made assumptions about the client before understanding the full story. This could have led to frustration or a lack of empathy toward the client. This experience taught me that it is important not to judge people too quickly. There is often more going on in someone's life than we can see, and taking the time to understand their situation can help us be more supportive and understanding.
