Freud would have us understand that our unconscious mind is fraught with conflict between what we impulsively desire and what we have internalized is the right thing to do/think/feel. If Freud is right, the really messy, nasty stuff is buried deep inside...and frankly, I don't think I want to see it. Still, we fight battles every day that aren't so threatening that we can't bring them to mind. Should I read the chapters or wing it? Should I eat that plate of brownies or stick to my diet? What are some of the conflicts you experience, and do you catch yourself using Freud's defense mechanisms? Do you have a favorite?
