Freedom means different things to different people. Each theorist we've examined sets out different reasons that explain why (and how) freedom is important: what we value about it and why. We've also talked about the limitations of freedom, both in terms of: 1) securing freedom for everyone (necessary protections/restrictions), and 2) the problems of viewing freedom in isolation from other concepts (equality, rights). This leads us to the recognition that it is necessary to limit freedom (which is the basic premise of social contract theories). In this essay I want you to do three things: First, tell me what it is that you think makes freedom valuable (and why this is the case). Second, pick an issue where we see this freedom in action (this can be a real-world example or it can be a hypothetical). Third, set out (and justify) the limits on freedom that you think are necessary to defend a meaningful conception of freedom.
