Here are four types of negotiation:

  • Competition: This approach is dominant, with a winner and a loser
  • Accommodation:
  • Compromise: If the goals of the parties are not the same and the parties involved in the negotiation are not of equal status, compromise is a good first step toward collaboration. As a final goal, compromise is not considered a best practice regardless of the cultural setting.
  • Collaboration: This approach makes all parties winners and creates long-term relationships
