Engineering Design
Learning Outcome 1. Prepare an engineering design specification in response to a stakeholder's design brief and requirements.
Learning Outcome 2. Formulate possible technical solutions by using prepared examples of engineering design specifications.
Learning Outcome 3. Prepare an engineering industry standard technical design repor by using appropriate design calculations, drawings and concepts.
Learning Outcome 4. Present, to an audience, a recommended technical design solution by using real examples of stakeholder briefs.
ASSIGNMENT 1: Greedys Pasties
Scenario
Assume that you are employed as a design engineer for Highfields Engineering, a small manufacturing company specialising in equipment for the food industry.
Greedys Pies and Pasties (Wigan) produce a range called "Perfect Pasties" which is aimed at the microwave reheat market for "Britain's Busy Families''. The pasties are packaged in trays of 4.
Your company has been approached by Mr Baker, Technical Ivianager at Greedy's Pies & Pasties to add a new module attached to the end of the conveyor. As part of a process efficiency and quality improvement a conveyor slide needs to be designed and installed at the end of the line to weigh and accept / reject each pack to ensure that no underweight packs are released to supermarkets. Underweight packages need to be safely rejected into a separate location where they will be stored and then distributed each day to various charity organisations
P1 Produce a design specification from a given design brief
P2 Explain the influence of the stakeholders design brief and requirements in the preparation of the design specification
P3 Produce a design project schedule with a graphical illustration of the planned activities
P4 Explore industry standard evaluation and analytical tools in formulating possible technical solutions
P5 Use appropriate design techniques to produce a possible design solution
P6 Prepare an engineering industry standard technical design report and describe the essential elements that need to be included.
P7 Assess the limitations of a presented technical design.
P8 Present the recommended design solution to the identified audience.
P9 Explain the communication strategy and presentation method used to inform the stakeholders of the recommended solution.
M1 Evaluate potential planning techniques. presenting a case for the method chosen
M2 Demonstrate critical path analysis techniques in design project scheduling planning and explain its use
M3 Apply the principles of modelling_ simulation and/or prototyping, using appropriate software. to develop an appropriate design
M4 Identify appropriate software and hardware recommended for problem solving.
M5 Explain the role of design specifications and standards in producing a finished product.
L16 Identify compliance. safety and risk management issues present in any engineering design process.
D1 Compare and contrast the completed design specification against the relevant industry standard specification
D2 Recommend justified improvements to suggested technical solutions to an identified problem
D3 Analyse the effectiveness of a presented engineering industry standard technical design report to produce a fully compliant finished product.
