Rifamycin and actinomycin D are two antibiotics derived from the bacterium Streptomyces. Rifamycin binds to the b subunit of E. coli RNA polymerase and interferes with the formation of the first phosphodiester bond in the RNA chain. Actinomycin D bind to double stranded DNA by intercalation (slipping in between neighboring base pairs).
a) Which of the four stages in transcription would you expect rifamycin to affect primarily? Explain why.
b) Which of the four stages in transcription would you expect actinomycin D to affect primarily? Explain why.
c) Which of the two inhibitors is more likely to affect RNA synthesis in cultured human liver cells? Explain why.
d) Which of the two inhibitors would be more useful for an experiment in which it is necessary to block the initiation of new RNA chains without interfering with the elongation of chains that are already being synthesized? Explain why
What sequence of nucleotide pairs in a Drosophila gene would encode the amino acid sequence met-trp-phe-trp-met (reading from the amino terminus to the carboxyl terminus).
What is the possibility that differences this great between observed and expected values would happen by chance. Two genes organize in corn snakes as follows: O-B is brown snakes, O-bb are orange, oo bb are albino. An orange snake was mated to a blac..

If we ignore the possibility of crossing over, how many different combinations of chromosomes are probable in gametes of a single human.
Explain how this could be considered a negative feedback mechanism. The amino acid residues at the active site are highly hydrophobic. In designing a drug that would bind to the active site and jam it, researchers must use which type of molecule.

explain Why is it advantageous for citrate the product of reaction 1 of the TCA, to inhibit phosphofructokinase, which catalyses the third reaction in glycolysis.
She was hospitalized on September 17. Thereafter she developed flaccid paralysis, had loss of mental acuity, and died on October 1. Serum collected on October 2 was negative for rabies antibody, but serum collected on September 25 had a 23 titer.
