For an assignment on the respiratory system I am trying to figureout why exactly we die from lack of oxygen.

I know that our cells need oxygen to create adenosine triphosphate,which is our cell's energy, and that without oxygen only 2 unitsget produced (through glycolysis) and the pyruvate molecules usedin the process of cellular respiration get fermented and turned into lactic acid. How exactly does this kill us?
