Question
The TED Talk on the British Longitudinal study focused on children. The TED Talk from the US Longitudinal study focused on young adult men growing old. For me, I felt as if the British study correlated heavily with the US study. If the children were raised in wealthy homes, they would turn out more academically successful, such as the men studying at Harvard College. If the children were raised in poverty, they were more susceptible to ending up in poverty than the men studied in the poor Boston neighborhoods. Poverty and wealth weren't the only things that correlated between the two though. In the British study, parents who were more nurturing and consistent with routines had more well-behaved children. These children grew to be more academically intelligent (Harvard students have always been some of the smartest people who chose to go to college). There was a correlation between childhood happiness and young adult success as well. Children who turned out to be more academically intelligent were more than likely taught that core values were happiness rather than wealth. The young men from Harvard and Boston who had the value of money over happiness were in worse physical health in comparison to the ones who learned to value happiness (good relationships). The men who learned to value good relationships between family, friends, and their community were shown to live longer and have been in better health. Not only did the two TED Talks coincide with the studies in our lesson, but also the timing of influences, nature versus nurture, and genetic predisposition. I felt as if the nature versus nurture and genetic predisposition aspects of both studies were more influential than the rest.
