Question

Matt noticed that all the salamanders disappeared from his flowerbed after he planted marigolds. Matt wanted to study whether marigolds repel salamanders. He tested this by finding 20 flowerbeds with an equal number of salamanders in them. He then planted marigolds in 10 of the flowerbeds and kept the other 10 flowerbeds marigold free. After a month he counted the number of salamanders remaining in each type of flowerbed. Matt wanted to be sure that there were no differences between the flowerbeds other than the presence or absence of marigolds so he made sure that each bed had the exact same kind of soil, sunlight exposure, temperature, moisture, and food amounts. He also made sure that initially each bed had the exact same species, size, and age of salamanders. If marigolds do repel salamanders, then after a month there should be fewer salamanders in the flowerbeds with marigolds in them than in the beds that are marigold free. Match each part of this study to its proper definition
